Tierrabomba and Baru are islands located in the Caribbean Sea. Spain conquered Colombia which became a colony. Big plantations were growing and the need of cheap labor brought the slaves from Africa. Colombia declared independence from Spain and gave freedom to the slaves who were living in the North coast. They settled in the islands and the government gave them legal rights to own that land. Unfortunately, there was no water and they had no access to main land.
As years past, people began to visit the islands attracted by the beautiful beaches.Primitive tourism started to be a main way of income for the islanders. They are nice people who make very low incomes and live in one of the most difficult areas because there is no fresh water.
Imagine yourself living in a house with NO WATER!!! That would drive you nuts!! These people have learned to live with the minimum and still they are nice and feel happy to be on the islands They are proud of their heritage and they believe they can offer a future to their children.
I visited this area since I was a child. My father used to take us there for vacation. As I grew up, I never forgot the poor children passing by and I thought:” One day , I might help them.” That dream has come true.
In 2004, I visited Baru with Lori Roshon, a teacher in NC and she was impressed by what she saw. She joined me in this program and she is an active member who is always looking for resources and ways to help.
Today is a vision come true. But we need the help of other people who might share the same feelings towards these islanders.I invite you to join us too!!
